An Unusual Business Model

Xtal.works follows a three-stage business model, from initial innovation via pilot line up to volume production. We excel in R&D, but our strength is not volume production. Therefore, we choose not to handle the volume production of our innovations ourselves. Instead, our strategy is to spin out a company, form joint ventures, or sell the technology once the pilot line reaches a maximum of €100 million in revenue. This approach allows us to focus on what we do best - continuously improving our technology and processes and creating new and disruptive innovations.

Innovation

A main innovation and ancillary innovations are generated and validated by simulations and experiments in the laboratory.

Pilot Line

The commercial viability of the innovation is demonstrated in a pilot line generating revenues of up to €100 million.

Volume Production

Although we do not set up mass production ourselves, Xtal.works continues to develop and improve the technology or moves on to other innovations if the technology is sold.

Goals & KPIs

  • In a Deep Tech company, Intellectual Property (IP) is the cornerstone of value creation. That's why, at Xtal.works, our Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) go beyond mere revenue numbers. Our current focus is on value creation through IP, with the goal of consistently filing 3-5 patents per year. This will increase as the company grows.

  • Research and development is at the heart of Xtal.works' business. Given our commitment to breakthrough innovation, a significant portion of our efforts is dedicated to early-stage research. Our current goal is clear: to advance our technologies by approximately 10-15 levels on the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) scale each year. Most of our technologies start at TRL1, which is why we have chosen to work closely with universities.

  • Once an innovation reaches a proven stage through a pilot production line and revenues exceed €100 million, Xtal.works avoids going into mass production. Instead, we aim to initiate a spin-off and create a new company specialized in large-scale production. This new company is equipped with a team of capable people to ensure its success. Our goal is to advance our technology to enable such spin-offs approximately every 5 years.
